I had a very pressing need to find my dream bed and mattress – it wasn’t more of a ‘want’ than a ‘need’. You see, about ten years ago I got a bulging disc in my back that meant at one point I could barely walk.
Small tasks became almost impossible and I ended up going for physiotherapy to manipulate the disc back into place. As a bit of a wake up call, I learned then and then that it was important for me to strengthen my core.
Fast forward a few years – and the slipped disc started to make a comeback. But this time, no matter what exercises I did, the back pain just wasn’t going away and I couldn’t work out why.
Then in May I went on a week’s *bleisure trip to Miami (*mixing business and pleasure!) and my back pain disappeared almost immediately.
I put this down to the fact that I was moving more and getting out and about, but one day during my holiday I called home and spoke to VIP.
He told me that he had slept on my side of the bed while I was away and he had woken up with terrible back pain.
And as he was saying it, the penny suddenly dropped; my mattress was more than 12 years old and it had to be its lack of support that was contributing to my deteriorating health. Something needed to be done – and fast.
I’ve always got in the habit of doing tons of research when I know I’m buying a high-end product. I need to know that the money I’m spending is being spent well and that any investment I make is a wise one.
That doesn’t mean that I scrimp when it comes to products – especially ones concerning my health, but I am interested in finding products that offer value for money.
So when it came to researching mattresses I spent a good week whittling it down to my final 3 and then doing some extensive research to decide on what I’d be buying.
There were many factors that I needed to take into account when deciding on the mattress including support, temperature, movement to name a few.
But the final choice for me came down to two factors – the best mattress that would support my preferred position of sleep (on my tummy!) and of course, the reviews. And trust me, I spent HOURS reading them.
But it paid off. In the end I decided that the best mattress to buy was Leesa.
On the company’s website it describes the Leesa mattress as…
…Redesigned from the inside out to give you the comfort, support, and universal feel everybody needs to sleep better. Our unique combination of performance foam layers deliver cooling bounce, contouring pressure relief and core support for amazing sleep.…
The Leesa mattress is expertly-crafted to offer extraordinary sleep, night after night, at an outstanding value. The 5cm Avena foam top layer provides airflow for a roller night's sleep and enough bounce for freedom of movement.
The 5cm memory foam delivers the body contouring and pressure relief you've come to expect from memory foam. The 15cm base foam adds strength, durability and structure to support sleepers of all sizes, with our feeling too firm.”
The company had so many great reviews to back up what it was claiming – and I was sold!
I ended up going for a Super King size! When I’ve stayed in hotel rooms that have had a Super King size bed, I’ve loved the fact that I can lie sideways and my feet and head don’t reach the ends.
And let me tell you my friends, this is one of the few benefits of being a vertically challenged 5’1”.
I bought my Leesa mattress online – and in fact, it was actually cheaper to buy it direct from Leesa’s website rather than a third party like eBay or Amazon (yes, I did LOADS of research on this too!)
My Super King size Leesa mattress cost £769 and at the time, Leesa was offering £120 off any bed or mattress plus free delivery, bringing the price down to £649 in total.
But you know what, I would have happily paid £1,000 for the mattress. Since acquiring it I’ve slept wonderfully – it feels really plush with just the right level of support, and I haven't had a bad back since. I really couldn’t have made a better choice.
My only regret was not changing my mattress years ago.
The dream bed!
So now that I had my dream mattress, I need a dream bed to go with it.
Again, having stayed in quite a lot of hotels in the past (given that I was a travel editor of a national magazine), I knew exactly what I wanted.
- It had to be a Chesterfield design as they look so plush and beautiful.
- I wanted a wingback bed (where the edges of the bedhead curve round) as I just think they look amazing and unique.
- I also wanted the bed to be an ottoman bed – as you can never have enough storage!
- It had to be medium or dark grey – eventually I want a French-style bedroom and the dark grey would go with romantic pale hues that I wanted for things like bed accessories and wallpaper etc…
I know I was asking a lot and that I had my work cut out. In truth, I spent the best part of three months trying to find the exact bed I was looking for.
I’d find loads of beds that were a Chesterfield style and that offered the wingback design, but they weren’t available as an ottoman style. Or I’d find something that had the first three requirements, but it wouldn’t be available in any other colour than ‘oyster’.
Eventually, I came across my dream bed – and I knew it was the one because as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to have it. I literally couldn’t stop looking at it. It had all four of my requirements too.
And would you believe me if I told you it came from eBay? Of all places, I wasn't expecting to find my dream bed (with such specific requirments) from eBay!
The bed was bought from a buyer called Chic-Furniture1 and cost £749.99. It sounds a lot, but it was worth every single penny.
And you know what? It’s STILL the best bed I’ve ever seen (or slept in!) to date. I literally could spend all day in my bed, stroking the headboard and feeling like a queen of the manor!
The bed accessories
So you can’t have a gorgeous bed without some plush bed accessories – and Beautfy (via Domu Brands) came to my rescue when they announced they had launched a new range of home furnishings including throws, bedspreads and cushions galore.
I chose this gorgeous (faux fur) Blush Pink Mongolian Throw to add a layer of glamour and luxury to my bed – and the great news is that it’s a very affordable £24.99.
I also chose a couple of pink velvet cushions (at £14.99 each), which match the throw’s subtle blush pink tones.
And how good does the pale dusty pink look against the dark grey bedhead?
As you may know, I’m also a massive fan of TKMaxx – they do some absolutely brilliant homeware in there – designer goods for a fraction of the price you’d normally pay for them. It’s my kind of shop as it really does offer fantastic value for money.
I picked up this Hotel Collection 300 thread count King Duvet Set from TKMaxx for less than £10 (it was originally £26).
The reason I got the King size rather than the Super King was because my mum had bought me a really expensive goose down king sized duvet not long ago which I love, so I kept the duvet as it still fits the Super King bed.
I also then had to buy a fitted sheet – and this 600-thread Charles Street Super King sheet was just the thing. The RRP was over £40, TK Maxx was offering it for £34.99 and then had reduced it further to £27, so I really did pick up a bargain.
One tip for when you do buy sheets – go for the highest thread count that you can afford. Your sheets will last for years and the higher the thread count, the more it feels silky and smooth – and luxurious to sleep on!
So that wraps up my post on my dream bed and mattress – the only thing left to do is to get my dream bedroom.
For that I’ll need new wardrobes, a lick of paint, some nice Damask wallpaper and maybe even a chaise longue. Well, you can’t go for the French look without a acquiring a chaise longue can you?! Here’s hoping 2019 sees my bedroom transformed – you’ll be the first to hear about it when it is!
What’s your favourite bedroom style? And what do you have your eye on updating in 2019?
A little note to let you know that this IS NOT a sponsored post – I paid for my items as a usual customer. Having said that, I am always honest in my opinions despite whether or not the post was sponsored. Don’t believe me? Check out this less than glowing report of a sponsored post.
