If you're a blogger you might as well be called ‘Jack' – as in ‘Jack of all trades'…writer, photographer, editor, proof-reader, video master and social media whiz…the list goes on…
Well, you have to get to grips with all of the above if you really want to make the most of the whole blogging experience.
But to most family and friends of bloggers, they have no idea what's going on. They'll wonder why bloggers have to take 100 pictures of their food before eating it, allowing it to go cold. They'll shake their heads at bloggers spending all their time peering at a screen. And they'll question why bloggers are ALWAYS on social media, complaining about algorithms.
As a lifestyle blogger, I know the answers to all of these questions – email me if you want them, because this isn't the post to go into the details on this.
But what I can tell you, however, is that most bloggers absolutely love blogging – it's our passion. And even if those who rely on their blogs for their wage don't earn a penny for a while, you can bet that most of them will continue to plough away at it because it's what they enjoy.
However, aside from gadgets like DSLR cameras, MacBooks and the latest iPhone, there are plenty of other picks and gift ideas that will make a blogger's life easier (and more enjoyable).
So to inspire and give all you friends and families a head's up on what to get your blogger friends or family members for the festive season, their birthday or any time that you're feeling generous, read on for some of the best gifts!
Being a huge tech fan myself, I couldn't write about blogging equipment and not mention tech. The word on the street is that drones are in – big time. They are a trend of their own and I'm a little obsessed with them.
Most bloggers (but definitely all vloggers) secretly hanker after one, and if you've just won the lottery (or are mega flush), then they will love you forever if this was on your gift list for them.
Having said that, bear in mind that all bloggers are not (yet) on YouTube, but video is massive – and it's only going to get bigger, meaning that the demand for smaller and more powerful drones will continue to grow, especially if they fit in your handbag.
Having done a little research on this (okay, quite a lot actually), I can tell you that the DJI Mavic Air Drone is probably the most popular choice amongst bloggers/vloggers. It's not cheap (at around £900), but it's reliable and powerful and will have bloggers doing a merry dance if they got their mitts on one.
If it's too much for you right now, hold off for the January sales and see if there are any prices reductions in the New Year. And remember – always check with a cashback site like Top Cashback to see if you can save even more money!
My next bit of tech as a gifting idea is vital for bloggers who are on the go – and it's the use of powerbanks to charge up those devices while out and about. Trust me, there's little worse than spending a few hours away from home, only to look at your phone and see there's just 20% left on the battery. If this happens to me and I haven't got a powerbank with me, I start breaking out in a cold sweat.
One great item that I've recently discovered (and I'm now the proud owner of) is this recently launched *PowerStones Trio by Ttec, which offers universal mobile chargers with a charging station.
The great thing is that there are two in a pack, so while one is charging (and it's fast charging guys!), you can take the other one out with you – and you then don't have to wait for it to recharge as you've got the spare one.
As you can see from the photo below, they're compact (and light to carry), yet offer a huge 5,000mAh capacity battery. And with an LED battery indicator, you can see at a glance how much juice you've got left.
The PowerStones Trio by Ttec are now available on Amazon for a very reasonable £39.99.
My next go-to piece of tech is a mini ring light for mobile phones. As you'll have probably noticed, us bloggers take LOADS of pictures, like EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.
And given the crap levels of natural light in the UK, especially in the winter months, we're always looking for the best light source to make our pictures pop and our Insta stories look great!
I recently bought myself this Diyife Ring Light (newest version) which is a rechargeable selfie ring light featuring 3 levels of brightness.
As it has a clip on action, it fits any smartphone and has saved my bacon (or rather, my face) a few times. At just £6.99, it's an affordable option for most bloggers, but they wouldn't mind finding it amongst their Christmas gifts (it's a great stocking stuffer) or wrapped up for their birthday. Just saying.
Most bloggers like to keep organised – heck, we certainly need to! And one of the best ways of staying on top of the huge list of ‘to-dos’ is to have a plethora of notebooks, diaries and journals!
For lovers of the written word, Paperchase do a great Blogger’s Journal which features a variety of specially designed layouts to help bloggers plan their blog posts, track their stats and reach their goals. Eat, sleep, blog, repeat!
It costs £18 but will be worth its weight in gold in the hands of a blogger!
Earlier this year (when I was still trying to work out how I could leave my full time job!), my good friend Nicky bought me a book called ‘The Four-Hour Work Week’ by Timothy Ferris.
It was one of those books that I just couldn’t put down; it was invaluable in terms of inspiring concepts, as well as practical ideas – some of which I’ve still got in place now (mainly the automated variety which are an absolute godsend).
Anyway, to cut a long story short, Tim’s book outlines how to live more and work less (something us bloggers strive to do!) by outsourcing aspects of your life that sap your energy and time.
I’ve still got my copy; it sits on top of my bedside table as a gentle reminder to follow Tim’s rules for a simpler life. And trust me when I tell you that it’s been well thumbed!
Have you noticed that bloggers taking hundreds of pictures of, well, everything? It’s like they’re trying to perfect every angle and experimenting with colours, shapes and shadows. Yep, that’s us!
So any good blogger will tell you that they need pretty props to liven up an Insta flat-lay (don’t ask!) or as a background object that complements that lovely new product they’ve been sent to review.
These props can come in the form of anything from faux flowers and Moroccan-style mirrored trays, to candles and fluffy blankets. If it looks pretty in a picture, it’ll do!
As I’m a fan of candles, glasses and slogan mugs (namely Wonder Woman ones), I’ll usually opt for one of these to add some depth to an image I’m planning on putting on the blog.
One of my faves – and an all-round go-to item for those looking for unique styling additions for their pics – are these *two pack of Geo Glasses from Root 7 for £28.
You can dress them up with a gin and slice of lemon or lime, or opt for a pretty look with some pink lemonade!
That just about wraps up the Blogger's Christmas Wish-List. I hope you've found some inspiration for your blogging friend or family member, and if this post has given you a teeny weeny insight into the life of a blogger, then welcome to a world I know well. Some would argue just a little too well!
If you're a blogger, what can't you live without?
