I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this once or twice before on the blog, but I’m a real home girl.
Yes, I love travelling and discovering new places, but I’m also at my happiest at home, surrounded by all my home comforts.
It has taken me a number of years to create a home environment where I’m really at ease, but which also looks aesthetically pleasing. And trust me, I’ve still got a long way to go on this, with unfinished rooms still left to do, but on the whole I’m happy with how far we’ve come in the ten years we’ve lived in our current home.
Sweat the small stuff
So we all have little rituals don’t we? It might be the way you make your bed, or the favourite mug you use for your morning cuppa. But it’s all these little creature comforts that we use to make our daily lives go without a hitch.
I recently read a survey from Europe Holiday Inn & Staybridge Suites that revealed Brits’ top 50 favourite home comforts and found myself agreeing with most of them – namely reliable broadband, the smell of clean clothes and a favourite pair of slippers – I know, I’m getting old!
Other top-ranking home comforts include the particular smell our homes have, home-cooked meals and a good book.
The study also found that more than three quarters of Brits admit to missing some of their home comforts when they’re away – and that on average, it takes less than four days of a holiday for people to begin missing their favourite items they left behind.
I can relate to this, particularly sleeping in my own bed (now that I’ve got the best bed in the world!) if the hotel one is not up to par and drinking Yorkshire Tea if I forget to pack the t-bags when I go away. I do like to create a ‘home from home’ when I’m away.
Hotel heaven
When I do stay away, I often think to myself that I could be the next Alex Polizzi (Hotel Inspector). I’ll spot things that other people don’t.
For example, in one hotel, the door of the ladies’ changing room opened ‘the wrong way’ in that as soon as it opened, you could see women changing.
Had the hotel had a bit of foresight, it would have had the door opening on the wall side so that women could comfortably get changed without the fear of men walking past (which they did because the men’s changing rooms were after the women’s – possibly another oversight).
My mini list of home comforts that I believe ALL hotels should have to ensuring a great night’s stay would look something like this.
- A complimentary bottle of water (preferably replenished every day)
- Free Wi-Fi
- A kettle and English-breakfast t-bags
- A pair of slippers for each guest
- Antibacterial gel
- Nice smelling toiletries
- At least 600 thread count duvet/pillow cases/sheets
- A 24-hr mini shop (or counter), which isn’t extortionately over priced!
As a rule of thumb, I take t-bags, slippers, a travel candle and a couple of nice smelling toiletries when I’m going to be away from home. What are your must-have home comforts you take with you when you’re staying away from home?
So then, back to the home comforts – my top ten includes the following: my family, the rabbits, TV/Netflix, my MacBook, my iPhone, my bed, double walled glasses, a nice cuppa (well, about ten cups a day!), dressing down and a tidy, clean and organised home.
And now to the top 50 home comforts most Brits can’t seem to live without…

That’s true Iris – and there are always sentimental things that bring back great memories aren’t there? It could be holidays away together or an anniversary – or just something you have with your family to joke around – it’s the little things if anything.

Home is by far my favourite place to be, I’m such a homebody! Always nice to go away but also very nice to come home! So pleased to hear you’re still loving your new bed! Doesn’t Alex Polizzi have the best job though?!! If I could be a different Alex I would be her!

Ohhh I love being at home to. As much as I love travel and socialising, I get excited by a saturday night home these days too! I would have to say my favourite thing about being home is being in my comfy clothes, no make up, hair up, incense lit, a hot bath, and a book. Lovely!
Ah, thanks Kerry! I’m totally with you on that! That sounds like my idea of an ideal night – except I’d probably opt for a film over the book, but only because I’m either reading or writing every hour of the day!
