You can spend hours researching which travel apps are worth downloading because there are just so many of them.
Luckily, you don’t need to as LateRooms.com has gone and done the job for us, pulling together the apps which help make spur-of-the moment trips possible.
And here they are:
Skyscanner (free – iOS and Android)
So…where to go to? Rather than waste time inputting your requirements into lots of different airline websites, just do it on one. Skyscanner pulls together up-to-date rates from hundreds of airlines in seconds, and its drop-pin feature means it can calculate routes to literally anywhere (on earth). If you haven’t yet decided on where to go, let the app help – just select ‘Everywhere’ in the destination field and it will show you how far your money will take you.
Packing Pro (£2.29 – iOS)
Now to the packing, but don’t over deliberate over this. Download Packing Pro and input where you are going and how long for and it will tell you exactly what you take with you – a bit like a digitalised Gok Wan – and who wouldn’t want Gok Wan on tap?
Air Sharing (£2.99 – iOS)
Is this a last-minute business trip you’re taking – or do you have some unfinished work to take care of? Then the £2.99 to download Air Sharing will be well spent. It allows you to preload your phone with important documents at the airport so you can check them while in the air, meaning your phone needn’t be a blunt instrument for the duration of your journey.
Google Translate (free – iOS and Android)
So you’ve landed and it’s time to find out where the nearest taxi rank is (or the coffee shop, lost baggage, toilets etc…) But fear not – Google Translate will help you navigate the local dialect. It even has a ‘visual recognition’ function in some languages, which lets you simply point your smartphone camera at some text and it will translate. Very handy.
LateRooms.com (free – iOS and Android)
Now that you’re on your way to your destination it’s probably wise to book some accommodation.
LateRooms.com’s app gives you access to over 150,000 properties globally and allows you to book a room in under 60 seconds – nice.
Also, the geo location functionality plots a map around your current location to show you every hotel with availability (and their room rates) within your surrounding area for that very night. Even better.
Also worth a mention is that hoteliers looking to sell remaining rooms on-the-day often show Mobile Exclusive Rates that could save you up to 40%, on top of what you might find elsewhere.
Wi-Fi Finder Connect Internet (free – iOS and Android)
An app that finds free public Wi-Fi spots, as well as those with a password, provided by users. The app lets you check the availability of free spots by putting in the city name or an address.
