The exact date to book cheapest flights revealed

by LaurettaCWright

Looking to bag the cheapest flights? New global travel statistics have revealed that Brits can book the cheapest fares at least 53 days in advance of their departure.

By analysing 12.6 billion airfares worldwide, momondo found that by booking travel early – just under two months in advance of departure – consumers could save an average of 26% on flight costs, enabling them to bag the cheapest fares.

And the most expensive tickets? Yes, you guessed it….on the day of departure. But flight price can also vary hugely depending on the day of the week, with the cheapest departure fares typically found on Tuesdays and the most expensive on Saturdays – the average flight cost difference between the days of the week being 11.5%.

Avoid midday flights
Time of the day is also important to consider when booking; momondo's global flight statistics show it’s normally cheaper to fly in the evening, between the hours of 6pm and 12am. And the travel site finds midday flights (between the hours of 10am and 3pm), the most expensive overall, by on average 6%.

Other factors affect fares
Ticket prices are also influenced by other buy reptile antibiotics factors, such as day of departure, airline, season and airport – and factors play very differently in on each route. momondo's free money saving tool Flight Insight is a great place to get started (looking at the six factors affecting fares) and is available on more than 10,000 routes worldwide.

I have actually found that sometimes it’s very cheap to book a ticket a couple of days before the flight. I managed to score prices of less than 50£ a few times, when I had to book a flight last minute.

That’s great new Joanna – sometimes it can pay off waiting until the very last minute. I think I’d feel a bit nervous about doing that – only because I don’t have the flexibility to change dates due to school…

This is very useful, thanks for the advice. We normally pay the extra for the more convenient timing with the children, but if it’s just the two of us with hubby, we go for the cheapest ones.

Yes, that’s a great idea and what we tend to do as well. Mind you, it’s getting easier choosing unsociable flight times as the kids get a big older.

I always tend to go for super early flights as I find them usually the cheapest, and I rarely go for the middle of the day ones x
