February Blogging Month: Blog Report

by LaurettaCWright
February Blogging Month

February has been an interesting month. I’ve had a slight change of tactic with the blog and, as such, had to focus more on my SEO and trying to get my head around how affiliate links work!

This has meant that despite my best efforts at sticking to a schedule, I haven’t quite managed it.

I initially wanted to publish two blog posts a week (on top of continuing with 10 New Things), but a couple of weeks ago I decided to decrease my blog post publishing (to once weekly) to free up more time to get all my posts SEO-friendly using Yoast.

It’s a ‘work in progress’ but I’m hoping that by the end of March – or thereabouts – I’ve managed it.

On the affiliate side of things, I’ve still got a lot to learn but I’ve been getting to grips with things slowly but surely. I even made my first commission – 10 pence! You’ve got to laugh don’t you?!

Perhaps I should have looked into this affiliate malarkey a couple of years ago! Better late than never I suppose.

I received an email from Black Betty to see if I’d like to try their website – and service. I have to admit, I’d never even heard of the company a few weeks ago, but having found out that you can save up to 90% off branded clothing and accessories, I had to give them a go.

What impressed me the most about the company (apart from their ridiculously great prices!) was that it has new styles in every single week, so there’s always something to tempt you.

I even made a video on what I picked up – have a watch here and let me know what you think!

Oh and if you fancy giving them a go yourself, you can use a 20% off code at checkout, courtesy off ours truly – it’s HORIZON20. You’re welcome 🙂

Who I met

I went along to a couple of events this month – but more to meet brands than mingle with bloggers.

They included the Germany Travel Show and, on the same day, Destinations at Olympia.

I didn’t stay long at Destinations as the place was pretty packed and I’m not good in large crowds – being 5’1” I often feel claustrophobic.

The Germany Travel Show was really handy, however, and I even managed to glean some information on the Black Forest for my upcoming summer holiday there this year – roll on summer I say!

In the charts (HIBS)

I’m not sure what’s happened with the HIBs chart – for about two weeks my stats haven’t been showing up on my website, so I’ve no idea whatsoever if I’ve climbed the ranks or if I’m still on that slippery slope…

I don’t like getting bogged down by stats anyway (it’s not healthy to be obsessive about things like this), but if my badge hasn’t rectified itself in the next couple of weeks I’ll try and find out what’s going on.

Guest Posts & Opportunities

I’m following a great blogger, coach and social media manager called Dani from Flourishing Freelancer, who helps both bloggers and entrepreneurs create and grow their online presence.

Check out her site if you get the chance – she shares access to a free resource library plus plenty of advice on how to grow online and earn yourself money.

So Dani and I have been chatting on email (I’m hoping she’ll take part in my In The Blog Seat Series soon!), but in the meantime, I took to her ‘hot seat’ to answer questions for her Blogging Bosses interview series.

Thanks for having me Dani!

I was also pleased as punch to be featured in Vision One Homes’ round-up post on the top three things to consider when creating a functional bathroom. They must have read my post on creating my perfect bathroom and decided I’d make a good person to ask.

Thrilled to take part of course – have a read here!

Epic fails

Apart from failing to start the ebook design I had intended to start this month, my other ‘epic fail’ came in the form of a series of migraine attacks.

I had three attacks in two weeks and, as you can imagine, it really put a spanner in the works on what I had planned for the blog.

I wouldn’t care so much, but for some reason my brain decides I’m going to get a migraine over the weekend.

Sadly, the weekend is the only time when I get more than an hour or two at a time to really work on the blog, so having that taken away from me from something beyond my control was unbelievably frustrating.

I also felt like I had ruined my family’s weekend too – me not wanting to go out or do anything together meant they didn’t want to leave me alone. And that made me feel even worse.

The final straw came when we went out with friends and I was unable to finish enjoying the night with them due to my migraine. It was at that point that I decided enough was enough and – I’m going to look into having Botox injected in my head.

Apparently, they’ve been known to prevent migraines for many people. Heck, I’ve tried most other things to combat them and it hasn’t worked, so I feel I’ve got to give this one a go. I’ll keep you posted of course.

My vlogging channel

I’m really proud to say that I’ve made at least two videos this month – the Black Betty Review I mentioned earlier – plus a ‘Tween Talk’ video with my daughter, Girlwrighter (Nadja), about bullies.

We really enjoyed making the video and tackling the issue of bullies and being bullied head on. Nadja was (understandably) a little reluctant to divulge ways in which she has been victimised – and put on a brave face when it came to talking about her thoughts on the subject and what she thinks is best to do.

I’m really proud of her for sitting there and chatting about it – especially as she had absolutely no idea that I was going to choose that subject matter to discuss – you should see her face when I announce it!

Other news

I was chuffed to discover that I’ve been nominated in the top 100 Interior Design Blogger Awards – it’s always nice to hear people have been checking out my site, although the picture they chose of me isn’t particularly flattering!Top 100 Interior Design BloggersFinally, something really interesting happened to me this month. It was an email exchange that I had with a brand that was shocked to discover that I’d want remunerating for wanting to promote THEIR brand. I know, right?

The whole thing bothered me so much that I decided to write a blog post on it. Luckily, plenty of fellow bloggers concurred with my ‘open letter’ to the brand, which called them out on their ridiculous work ethics.

Fortunately, most of the brands I work with understand that professional bloggers need to earn money – if only they all arrived at the same conclusion!

That’s about it for February – for March I’m getting focused on blog organisation (SEO and consistency being the two big words!) It’s something I should have looked at from the beginning, but we don’t know these things when we start off do we?!

Blogging Month: February At A Glance

What was great? Paring back the blog posts to focus on SEO and learning about affiliate links. It’s all about the priorities!
What wasn’t? Receiving that shocking email from a brand.
Goals for March: Hook up with some blogging friends – it has been too long!

Have a great March – and if you're a mummy…..Happy Mother's Day!

Steph 1st March 2018 - 8:47 pm

Oh that’s such a big job going through the posts. It’s something I need to do but I’m rubbish at boring jobs like that! Hope the migraine settle soon

Cath - BattleMum 28th February 2018 - 10:14 pm

What a great report. I desperately need to address past posts and their SEO but I’m trying to get a few weeks ahead with scheduled posts to free up some time to do this job. Well done on cracking on with it yourself!

LaurettaCWright 28th February 2018 - 10:22 pm

I think we all feel like we’re chasing our tail sometimes – well, mostly all the time for me!

Claire 28th February 2018 - 7:57 pm

A great monthly report, I really enjoyed reading this. I have never tried affiliate links before. I keep meaning to look into it but then I am always rushing around. I really should do though.

LaurettaCWright 28th February 2018 - 8:05 pm

It might be worth reading an ebook to try and digest some information if you’re interested in finding out more about affiliate links.

Newcastle Family Life 28th February 2018 - 2:46 pm

I have never tried affilite links, they confuse me. I am also going through old posts and making them more seo friendly, it is taking me forever x

LaurettaCWright 28th February 2018 - 2:56 pm

Better late than never as they say! Good luck!

fashionandstylepolice 28th February 2018 - 10:56 am

Yes professional bloggers need to earn money. We can’t live on products and high resolution images.

LaurettaCWright 28th February 2018 - 2:50 pm

Ha ha! Well put…I like it!

Talya 28th February 2018 - 9:21 am

That’s so interesting that you’ve been using a coach Hun I’m sure that is really going to help you get to the next level!

LaurettaCWright 28th February 2018 - 2:58 pm

She’s got some great tips on her blog and Dani’s emails are handy too. Thanks Talya!

Kate 28th February 2018 - 2:03 am

As a fellow migraine sufferer I totally feel your pain (pun intended!) – mine used to be much worse, then for some reason improved immensely after having children. I have had a few attacks in the last month or two and have even looked into Botox, so I’d be really interested to hear your thoughts if you go through with it. I also applaud you for calling out brands that want you to work for free – it’s very frustrating!

LaurettaCWright 28th February 2018 - 2:59 pm

Thanks Kate – I’m toying with trying the Daith piercing again – just to see if it helps. But this time go to a specialist!

Jess Howliston 27th February 2018 - 9:11 pm

So sorry to hear you have been suffering from migraines but it sounds like you are doing great with the vlogs! I too try not to worry to much about the stats as I find when I start worrying about these I worry less about the content which then turns into a slippery slope lol! Hope March is a fab month for you.
