Now that the kids are a bit older, VIP (Mr Wright) and I decided to upgrade our sofas to fabric ones. We’ve lived with leather ones for about 12 years – ever since I first found out that I was first pregnant.
I didn’t really like them; they were always cold, the colour faded and when we moved seven years ago, the style didn’t suit our house or interior scheme. But we persevered with them.
After all, the kids had spilt all sorts of drinks on them, not to mention the countless vomiting and toilet accidents over the years. And the beauty of leather sofas of course is the fact that the clean up was a simple, easy wipe down.
But now that they were older and a bit more sensible, I was excited to finally getting the fabric sofas I’d craved.
Unlike leather they wouldn’t stick to you in the summer if you were wearing shorts and they’d be warm and comfortable to sit on – a top priority of course.
But then I heard of Liquiproof Fabric Protection, which sounded like magic in a bottle; you spray it on fabric and it makes it liquid repellent.
Given that the odd drink accident is likely to happen – kids or no kids – I had to give it a go…
First impressions & application
The bottle was compact and the packaging was unfussy. The instructions suggest that surfaces are clean from dust, ready for application. You spray the fabric (from about 10-15cm away) until the fabric is damp – and to ensure it has really worked itself into the fibres, you can rub it in with a soft-bristled brush.
I gave my chair (with removable fabric cushions) a thorough spray, waited until it was dry and sprayed it again. Then I waited 24 hours before doing a test – pouring water over the cushion.
The science
The solution works by bonding SiO2 particles to the individual fibres of the fabric, creating permanent bonded layers which forms an invisible barrier that keeps water and oil from ruining the shoe surface.
The formula is effective for everyday situations allowing even suede shoes and jackets to maintain permanently stain free from the rain and spillages. The cost effective formula enables a permanent protector for all shoes and clothing without affecting the look, feel or breathability of the fabric.

So, what happened?
Well, you can watch for yourself by clicking on the video below, but suffice to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the results.
I tested the cushion prior to application to show you what happens when liquid is poured on it, applied the solution (twice), waited 24 hours then it was time to see if it worked.
In short, the water formed droplets of liquid that simply ran off the fabric cushions and onto the floor. It was quite fascinating to watch actually – take a look!
The good news is that even though I expected the liquid itself to smell, it didn’t. Not even faintly of cleaning solutions, which was a nice touch.
Now I’ve just got another five cushions to go, as well as my new sofa, the sofa in the kitchen, the office sofa, oh, and the two rugs, Mr Wright’s ties….looks like I’ll be needing a few more bottles.

My folks have had a leather sofa… for like forever! They are craving a velvet sofa – one day…maybe with the help of this!

That sounds like an interesting product. We have leather sofas but are children are all young so it’s safer for us at the moment as they like to spill all sorts on them.
This stuff looks quite impressive. We have an old battered leather sofa for the kids to play on but I do have a beige sofabed which was quite expensive I might give this a go on. I found Caitlin sitting on it the other day happily eating a blackcurrant lolly. It could have ended very badly!
Sounds like a must have especially if you have kids at home! I think this is really going to protect your furniture and your shoes better. Definitely something that I’d get!

I really need some of this but I can’t help but think £40 is too much. If it was cheaper I would be buying this right now but instead I think I will see if I could find a cheaper alternative.
I have used this before. I used it on my coat and shoes to keep myself dry. worked a treat.
This looks like a great product! We’re thinking of getting a new sofa and chairs and this would be ideal – things get spilt and cushions get stained however hard we try to keep them looking bright and clean! I like the idea that it’s in a non-aerolsol bottle and that it can be used on different products.
Leather sofas are so handy with small children, aren’t they? Like you that’s what we’ve been using these last 15 years, but yes, I’d like fabric ones again soon. This product sounds like a must-have when we finally make the switch!

It’s great for fabric that is likely to get stained at one point or another.
I have a fabric sofa as well and whilst I have to admit that I miss how easy the leather one was the clean, this one is so much more comfortable and looks better. I didn’t know the existence of this product before, I shall look into it as it does looks great and easy to clean with.

we have fabric sofas so I think I need some of this in my life at the moment I just cover them with throws and hope but it isn’t the most effective way for sure.
