We’ve all done it – putting milk in the cupboard and cereal in the fridge, entering a room and forgetting what you went in for (a specialty of mine) and getting irate when having to queue. But according to Best Western, these are all key signs you need a break.
The study of 2,000 people revealed swearing more often, repeatedly hitting snooze on the alarm and forgetting a loved one’s birthday were also common signs of stress, along with having a messy house but not wanting want to tidy it and eating more and more comfort food.
On average, people will put up with five different signs a break is needed before they will actually commit to going somewhere nice.
Indeed, one in five of those polled will wait until absolute breaking point before booking a short break. Other signs a rest might be a good idea include shouting at the telly more often and secretly wanting to dislike photos on Facebook when friends share their holiday snaps.
Key findings included:
- In order to feel suitably refreshed, a break should last an average of four days
- The most popular region to visit would be South West England, closely followed by Scotland and North West England.
- Once back home those surveyed feel refreshed for six days on average and they wait around seven months before going away for their next break.
- The biggest barrier to getting away is finances, followed by not being able to get time off work and family commitments.
- On average the longest period people have gone without taking a long weekend is two years and three months.
- And sadly, 8% of those surveyed have gone without a break for 10 years or more at some point in their life.

I think this list is fab. Regular breaks from work and day to day life are essential to recharge the batteries and to prevent mishaps like leaving the house in slippers 🙂
Thanks Zena – this did make me laugh. I think I might have done this on a couple of occasions! 😉
Lol, loving the list of reasons why I need a break. I think I really need one if I go by that as I can tick off a fair few x
That’s why we need to take regular breaks right?! 😉
I can never get enough breaks, as soon as I get back, I just want another one!
I know what you mean. But it’s quite nice coming home don’t you think? Besides…we always have the washing/ironing to catch up on!
Hahah way too many grey hairs here! I so need a break, luckily we have a holiday this week!
Oooh enjoy Laura!!
Oh goodness, I can relate to most of these. I wish I had time for a break
woweeee! My mummy has a lot of those traits! Oooops. she needs a break thank goodness its half term…oh wait, not that kinda break!
Ha ha! The good thing about half term though is we don’t get the mad rush in the morning!
Ok so it seems I need a break! There just isn’t the time, but planning a holiday soon to force us all to take a bit of a break 🙂
Even if it’s just an overnight stay in a different town – it can do you wonders. Groupon have got some great deals for one-night stays – you should have a look!
I can definitely tick a few of these off. It’s really important to take a break, sometimes we don’t give ourselves enough rest
I wholeheartedly agree with this – we run ourselves into the ground and wonder why we get ill (I’m very guilty of this!) – so wise words and something I need to pay attention to myself.
Great piece of information, the reason I started to blog is also kind of similar, I was getting too comfortable in my routine life, there was no thrill left, no enthuse at all. I needed some excitement in my life and blogging gives me that. Sometimes all we need is a break from our daily life, this post makes me realize this even more, loved it!!
Thanks Anki – do you know I was just thinking that this morning – how blogging offers a ‘release’ from daily stress… I was actually thinking it’s quite therapeutic! Thanks for the comment ?
