August Blogging Month: Blog Report & Income Report

August Blogging Month: Blog Report & Income Report

August was a very significant month for me in terms of my job and how I work. Without going into too much detail (just yet!), it means that I’m much more focused on the blog and its long-term goals – and I can finally start executing some much needed systems.

First things first though – I need to get on top of the emails. As soon as I clear 20 of them, another 8 have popped into my inbox!

I think I just need one full day with no distractions to have a good old clear out, although I can’t see that happening until the kids are back at school next week.

Collaborations

I’ve been collaborating on a few sponsored posts this month, but I’ve mainly been getting offers of product reviews.

At this stage of my blog, I don’t typically write a full blog review in return for a product. For small cost items it’s not worth my while spending hours putting together a blog post, but for much higher cost items, then it makes complete sense.

Who I met

I hooked up with blogging friend, Anna Nuttall, for a quick look round my local town. It was great of her to come over and Anna offered some advice on dealing with the whole http to https switch on the blog (see below!).

I ended up buying a pair of trainers (which Girlwrighter has now ‘borrowed’ – can you believe my ten-year old has the same shoe size as me?!), as well as a few make up bits and bobs.

In the charts

Last month I reported that I had climbed to number 32 in the HIBS charts, and this month (as I predicted), it has dropped down to number 38. I’m still really chuffed with this of course – I remember going out for a celebratory meal when I got into the top 100, so I’ve got to be pleased that I’m now in the top 50.

But to make up for the slide, my DA score has increased by one to 38. I set a target for the end of the year for 36, so I’m over the moon that I’ve pipped this already.

Guest posts

I had the opportunity to contribute to a post that Your Parking Space were putting together on ‘The Top Ways To Earn A Side Income According To The Experts’.

I quite like these round-up posts and it’s a great article, with some interesting suggestions from a selection of bloggers – have a read here.

Epic fails

So this month I’ve been away for a week, spent two weeks having a massive clear out of the kids’ rooms, my office, the kitchen cupboards and things like that.

And as mad as it sounds – cleaning and tidying helps me to de-stress (I even wrote a blog post on it here!).

But catching up on household stuff and getting my focus right has meant that anything blog-wise took a back seat. And that’s my ‘epic fail’ for this month.

Mind you, in last month’s blogging month my goal for August was ‘Write what I can, catch up on the housework and then relax for a couple of weeks, ready to hit the ground running in September’. So I guess I was only following my own advice!

The other ‘epic fail’ was on my #SnappedUp Linky – July had been an awesome month, but numbers had dwindled in August.

I’m putting this down to the summer holidays and the fact that people are a lot busier – either going away on holiday or too busy looking after their kids to take part in things like linkies.

Other news

In between all of the changes that went on this month (work schedules, cleaning and tidying and general organisation etc), I managed to get myself along to one of my favourite shops, TKMaxx. I was glad that I did as I came across something that I really needed.

It was this ‘Girls In Charge’ journal, and as soon as I opened it I knew I had to buy it. The journal ran from August, which I saw as a sign that I needed it – changing times, changing systems and all that…

So I went ahead and bought it and I spent £14.99. It runs right through until December 2019, so it was money well spent.

My vlogging channel

Unfortunately, I only managed one video this month. I can forgive myself as we were away for a week and lots has been happening at home, but I must have at least 20 videos on my phone waiting to be edited.

Anyway, the one video that I made was on a shopping spree to Poundworld Plus, which was closing down and had a 50% off sale. Here are some of the bargains I managed to nab.

Blog learning

I enjoy discovering new systems, apps and reports relating to the blog as I really think that it’s important to keep learning – and bettering systems and getting inspiration for ideas.

Just recently I discovered a website that can help you generate blog titles. It’s called Portent, and even if you don’t decide to go with their suggestions, it may well just inspire your next blog post!

The other thing that I did this month was to change my URL from http to https and order an SSL certificate for the blog.

It was actually a lot simpler than what I thought it would be. And my provider, TSO Host were really helpful – especially as they can advise you both on the phone and over one of those chat bots.

I changed my host provider over from Go Daddy a few months ago and I’m pleased with both their service and their price – in fact, to switch my hosting site to them when it was up for renewal saved me more than £100 had I stayed with Go Daddy.

If you think that TSO Host is for you – you can get an extra 10% off your order if you type in ‘HAH10’ as a promo code.

Income report

Here’s an interesting story for you – so I reported in my July Blogging Month and Income Report that I had made some pretty cool commission, but wasn’t sure if I’d see any of it. Well, turns out I didn’t.

August Blogging Month: Blog Report & Income Report

I decided to dig a little further and discovered that, in total, I had made a total of 80 sales for Whittard of Chelsea, with the amount totalling £2,714.44. I know, right?!

The commission that I should have received for this – £135 – was declined, so I decided to get in touch with them to find out why.

Apparently there had been ‘a mix up’ with orders placed through head office and my affiliate link – and so they had to decline my commission. It was a bit of a blow as I thought that I had really started to crack the affiliate code. Pah!

So although July revealed a great pick up in affiliates despite the hiccup with the advertiser (with a cleared balance of £10.31), August showed a bit of a drop, with my ‘approved and cleared’ balance being £6.96. Still, better than a kick in the teeth of course.

August At A Glance:

What was great?  The DA increase – I’m aiming to reach 40 by the end of the year.
What wasn’t? The drop in link-ups for the linky, the decrease in affiliate links, the lack of blog focus and only making one video. Oh dear.
Goals for September: Come up with a blogging schedule that will enable me to stay focused and get more done in less time.

It’s a lovely idea to detail your month, keeps you focused on what has worked and what hasn’t. I think lots of people look a step back over the holidays with blogging. I know I did and I was so happy to do so! I really needed a break. I’m like you though I really need to get a routine and stick to it, can be so hard to do so though!

Thanks Steph – I think the trick is to keep it going like you said – keeping all the balls in the air is tough going whichever way you look at it. Good to know I wasn’t the only one taking a mini break over summer! 🙂

That sucks about the commission but at least you know what the blog is capable of un terms of affiliate sales and you can move forward with pursuing that. I’m really looking forward to hearing more about your future goals and we must try and meet up sometime!! Always enjoy reading your blog

Ah thanks Laura – that’s really kind and supportive of you. It has been a long time since we caught up, so please let me know when you’re next around in London and we can look to hook up!

Thanks for sharing, it’s a great way to see what works and what doesn’t. I should start doing this. August had been a rubbish month for me as the block to a back burner to the summer holidays

It’s quite interesting to be able to look back and what you’ve achieved over the months Kerry, so I’d definitely recommend giving this a go. Plus we always assume we haven’t done a lot when in fact, we should all be kinder to ourselves and accept the compliments (says she who isn’t very good at it either!)

We’re definitely going to join up with #snappedup Linky in Sept, so give us a kick. August is such a hard time as loads of people put blogging on the backburner due to school holidays x

No worries Bella – I anticipated that September is the worst month in terms of parent bloggers getting things done…it’s a tough one!

Great insight here. It is such a shame about the mix up on commision sales 🙁 I have been really quiet over the last 6 weeks and only got one work offer any good. I am hoping September is going to start picking up 🙂

Thanks Claire – I think a few of us have seen a dip in activity over summer, but once the kids go back and more people are back into a routine I think things will start picking up again – good luck!

I love reading these posts, I love how honest you are with everything! My daughter has the same size feet as me and has done for a couple of years, my shoes are always going missing and I get so annoyed haha! x

Oh that’s funny! I suppose the advantage for us is that we’ve got twice as much footwear to choose from. I have a feeling she’s going to overtake me soon though! Really chuffed you’re enjoying the blog & income report. Always going to be transparent if it helps other bloggers! 🙂

That sucks about the affiliate mix up I’ve never tried adding affiliate programs to my blog but I’ve never read much positive about them.

Sounds like a very mixed month with some great highs and a shame with the affiliated link commission not working out for you. Here’s hoping September you can get a schedule that works for your lifestyle x

Reply
LaurettaCWright 4th September 2018 - 10:02 pm

Ah thank you Kirsty – I’m determined to make the schedule work for September – if only so I can update my end of month report that I finally managed to tick this off the list! The month after will be about getting to grips with affiliate links I think – still a bit of an amateur.

Thanks Rebecca – hope you’re well. I think many bloggers have seen a bit of a dip in August – September seems to be picking up already thank goodness. Reminder to self for next year: line work up for August ahead of time!
