Modern mums face so many testing times of parenthood. We’ve all experienced how challenging and difficult it can be to raise kids, and sadly, we often get no ‘me time’ to ourselves.
In fact, it’s estimated that the average modern mother gets just 17 minutes of alone time each day. And that’s why, when we get the opportunity to spend time alone we should make the most of it! Sure, we all love our kids and our partners, but sometimes they can drive us mad – here’s some of the best ways modern mums can enjoy being home alone as much as possible.
Reading in the sunshine
There are few things more pleasant and relaxing than reading in the sunshine – even better if you have a garden to relax in. And guess what? Reading is actually great for your health – reading helps you develop muscle memory, destroys stress and keeps your brain young.
It’s also a wonderful way of relaxing and losing yourself in another world. Weather dependent, you can spend hours sat out with a good book, or Kindle, and just unwind. And if you don’t have a garden or outside space, then the local park is a good alternative.
An early morning coffee
Here’s something you should try starting tomorrow. Set your alarm to get up around a half hour earlier than you normally do. Then, sneak downstairs and enjoy an early morning cup of coffee to yourself (newspaper optional).
It’s a great way to start off the day with this little slice of ‘me time’. To enhance your experience even more, invest in an easy-to-use, top line coffee machine such as the Jura Ena Micro 1 (click here for a great review); although many mums are happy with instant coffee (for the quick convenience), if you want to add a touch of luxury to your early morning, it’s worth investing in the right machine.
A glass of wine and Netflix
Sometimes it seems like you never have time to do anything you enjoy these days. That’s why it’s great to ensure you make time for a glass of wine (or your favourite tipple) and some Netflix.
Taking the time to shut your brain off and catch up on your favourite shows can do wonders for your sanity. Try to get the kids to bed early, or at least promptly, then you can sit back, relax, and catch up on your favourite shows. If you’ve not already tuned into one of the hit Netflix shows like Stranger Things or Orange is the New Black, then now’s your chance!
Do a spot of gardening
If you are one of those mums who is a bit stir crazy and always needs to be doing something, then you’re in luck. You probably thought this list was just going to involve suggestions of lying in a hot bath or taking a nap. Well, those are important, but so are things like gardening!
If you’re a bit green-fingered, then it is really important to spend your time out in the garden. You could do a bit of pruning, plant some new flowers, or tend to the vegetables. Gardening can be really therapeutic, and the beauty of it is that it also allows you to make your property look better!
Go for a walk
It’s amazing how much you can benefit from going walking. Many of usdon’t get out as much as we should the days, but even just going out for a walk each day can make a massive difference. It can help keep you more active and clear your mind of stress and worry.
A lot of people have a route they like to walk, and you should experiment and find one that works for you depending on how much time you have. And of course walking has been known to reduce stress and reduce the risk of heart disease, asthma and even some cancers. Spend some of your alone time walking and enjoying the lovely surroundings!
Zumba or yoga
Speaking of exercise, you might want to consider taking a yoga or Zumba class. These are great ways of staying fit and active, both mentally and physically. Both activities offer a great way of meeting new friends and keep yourself looking and feeling great.
Do something that makes you happy
One of the most important things you need to think about is doing something that makes you happy. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it makes you happy it’s worth doing.
It could be taking a long soak in a hot bath, playing sport or even baking. Domestic bliss is something that all mothers crave in our lives. And taking the time to do things that make you happy is really important. If you can find the time to do things that are important to you it really eases the burden of parenting.
