So I have to tell you about a great cinema hack to kick off my June Favourites and Things I’ve Tried – just because it’s such a fabulous find.
While I was shopping for sweets for movie night in Sainsbury’s recently, I picked up a packet of mini Starbursts (the one without the wrapping) and noticed that it had a cinema promotion on the pack.
According to the promotion, if I bought two large bags of sweets (for £2 in total), it would entitle me to watch any 2D film on a Sunday at any participating cinemas.
I picked up 4 bags of sweets (£4 in total) to claim two cinema tickets. And then the following day in Tesco I picked up another four bags to get two extra tickets.
Inside the bags are a code which you type into the website to get your ticket. But you have to do this by 11.59pm on Wednesday 7th August and use the cinema tickets by 25th August. It’s great as the kids will be on holiday so the four of us can all go to the cinema for just spending £8 on sweets!
And of course, you can take the sweets with you, saving you money from buying them there! Just make sure the pack you pick up has 5 stars on it (you have to collect 10 stars to get one cinema ticket).
Anyway, here’s what else I’ve been loving and trying out this month…
Pack ya bags!
VIP and I (and the kids) are hoping to get away this summer. Sadly we can’t go abroad (not while I’m having chemo), but we can staycation! We’ve already got two getaways lined up and then in December – possibly a third getaway to Germany (if I’m given the all clear).
Anyway, when it comes to packing the cases, Domu Brands let me try out Beautify’s packing cubes* – I’ve heard a lot of people say they’re big fans. And even though I’m not planning on going away for at least another month, I couldn’t help but experiment with them.
Being someone who is quite fussy about being organised (I live by the mantra tidy desk, tidy mind), the idea of compartmentalising my belongings – underwear and socks in one bag, shoes in another, tees and tops in a separate bag is very appealing. There’s something quite cathartic about being more in control with packing my belongings. I mean, gone are the days when I’ll now open my case and all my clothes will be mixed up gathering creases.
The cubes keep everything in one place, tidy and organised and I can see that once you start using them for packing, you wouldn’t want to change back to the old way.
Have a look – at just £14.99 for the lot, they would make a great gift for a travel fan. ANNNNDDD…. the GREAT news is that Domu is teaming up with me to give away a pack of seven gorgeous grey and rose gold organisers, which I’m running for July! (Head over to the competitions page to get a look in!)
In my May Favourite Finds, I talked about wanting to get my teeth into a series and was asking for suggestions after I was getting withdrawal symptoms from Line Of Duty finishing. And then I discovered that Season 3 of Designated Survivor with Keither Sutherland was back on Netflix! Woooohoooo – so it means I’m sorted for a little while!
I’ve also made a note to give The Tunnel a go after Alex from Living Pretty Happy offered it as a suggestion. And a couple of people also suggested Killing Eve – but I’ll have to go back to the beginning for that one.
I've also recently learned that Stranger Things 3 is coming to Netflix – and even better…it arrives on 4th July – my birthday! I've told VIP that I want to stay in that night and binge watch – I might even end up pulling an all-nighter, but I doubt it.
June mini haul
Another June favourite (and things I've tried) has to be the mini haul I picked up from one of my favourites – Shop TK Maxx – earlier this month. I was biding some time before a saw a potential advertiser for the magazine and I managed to pick up a mini beauty haul.
Here’s what I put in the basket…
by nature face serum cream for £4.99: I chose this particular brand as it has no parabens in it – something that’s really important to me. It has a subtle smell which I prefer and sinks in very easily to my skin. Plus within a couple of minutes I’m ready to put on my moisturiser or sun cream – I don’t have to wait ages.
A multi-tasking make-up brush (for my foundation): I was particularly happy to find this brand as it’s from the ‘Look Good, Feel Better’ range which supports women with cancer. It cost £3.99.
Manuka Honey: This is usually quite expensive, but this particular brand (Australian BeePower) was £3.99 so I thought I’d give it a go. It’s a nice taste and I feel smug consuming it.
Sukin Paw Paw Ointment. Again this is sulphate and paraben free and I’ve bought it before, so as a fan I knew it was a no-brainer. I’m never without it in my handbag now.
Tiana Cocotop organic coconut snack for £1.49. I was hooked by the words ‘coconut’ and ‘organic’ and these bite-sized snacks are a healthier alternative to sweets. However, I wasn’t a huge fan to be honest. In small doses – just a few flakes, they were fine, but they didn’t float my boat so I ended up giving them to VIP to polish off.
So a while ago I went and ordered a few hats off eBay in preparation for when my hair fell out with the chemo I’m on. And after just 3 weeks it started to come out, so I got my daughter to shave my head. You wouldn’t believe how cold your head can get with no hair on it!
Anyway, I’ve got hats for sleeping in, hats for protecting me from the sun and special hats for when I’m out and about. Most of the time I haven’t felt the inclination to wear one, so I haven’t bothered, but they’re handy to have for when my head gets cold!
My favourite has to be the one a friend spotted for me in Zara – it cost £9.99 and is really pretty – I haven't yet worn it – I think someone needs to teach me how to tie scarves nicely first!
What I really need is some nice jewellery to distract from my bald head – since I ran a competition with Eternity Rose last year, I've really liked some of their intricate rose designs which come in different colours. I'm also keeping my eyes peeled for some unique, one-off finds, but for some reason I'm leaning more towards bracelets rather than rings, earrings and necklaces – probably because I only own one bracelet!
Have you heard of Scrub Daddy? I picked up one of these washing sponges last year and it has lasted me ages. It’s great because if you use cold water with them it stays hard (great for scrubbing pots and pans) and if you use them with warm water, it goes soft and is great for everyday washing up.
I was telling my business partner how good they were, but I couldn’t find them anywhere then ended up spotting them in The Range for a few quid – bargain!
Karen from Tippett PR got in touch after seeing some of my Breast Cancer Diaries Highlights on Instragram (#bcdiaries) and wanted to send me some sun protection products from Ultrasun*.
I got the SPF 50 Extreme protection (which I’m using on my head), SPF 30 for my hands and SPF 50 for my face. I love that the creams are free from all the chemicals and they’re fragrance-free – perfect for my sensitive skin.
Since posting about Ultrasun on my Instagram feed and stories, I received five messages from my followers to tell me that they also use Ultrasun and swear by it – it seems like I was the last to know! But anyway, I’m also now a convert to the brand. It’s great for my skin, isn’t overbearing with fragrance and soaks in really easily – great if you want to slap it on and go like me!
The summer sale
Last but not least for my June favourites and things I've tried, I managed to pick up some fab finds in the Rex London Summer Sale – on now! I’ll reveal more about this in my ‘June Blogging Month’ – but suffice to say, I got some cracking bargains and managed to enjoy afternoon tea in the garden (minus the rain) this month, which was lovely. See my main picture for this blog post to see the set up!
Sometimes it’s just nice to remind yourself to relax – and then go and relax isn’t it?! It was lovely to be able to sit down and enjoy the finger sandwiches I had lovingly made and stuff myself with pastries and cakes – a real treat!
How about you – what treats have you enjoyed this month? Anything new to share in terms of newly discovered products?
