February has been an interesting month. I’ve had a slight change of tactic with the blog and, as such, had to focus more on my SEO and trying to get my head around how affiliate links work!
This has meant that despite my best efforts at sticking to a schedule, I haven’t quite managed it.
I initially wanted to publish two blog posts a week (on top of continuing with 10 New Things), but a couple of weeks ago I decided to decrease my blog post publishing (to once weekly) to free up more time to get all my posts SEO-friendly using Yoast.
It’s a ‘work in progress’ but I’m hoping that by the end of March – or thereabouts – I’ve managed it.
On the affiliate side of things, I’ve still got a lot to learn but I’ve been getting to grips with things slowly but surely. I even made my first commission – 10 pence! You’ve got to laugh don’t you?!
Perhaps I should have looked into this affiliate malarkey a couple of years ago! Better late than never I suppose.
I received an email from Black Betty to see if I’d like to try their website – and service. I have to admit, I’d never even heard of the company a few weeks ago, but having found out that you can save up to 90% off branded clothing and accessories, I had to give them a go.
What impressed me the most about the company (apart from their ridiculously great prices!) was that it has new styles in every single week, so there’s always something to tempt you.
I even made a video on what I picked up – have a watch here and let me know what you think!
Oh and if you fancy giving them a go yourself, you can use a 20% off code at checkout, courtesy off ours truly – it’s HORIZON20. You’re welcome 🙂
Who I met
I went along to a couple of events this month – but more to meet brands than mingle with bloggers.
They included the Germany Travel Show and, on the same day, Destinations at Olympia.
I didn’t stay long at Destinations as the place was pretty packed and I’m not good in large crowds – being 5’1” I often feel claustrophobic.
The Germany Travel Show was really handy, however, and I even managed to glean some information on the Black Forest for my upcoming summer holiday there this year – roll on summer I say!
In the charts (HIBS)
I’m not sure what’s happened with the HIBs chart – for about two weeks my stats haven’t been showing up on my website, so I’ve no idea whatsoever if I’ve climbed the ranks or if I’m still on that slippery slope…
I don’t like getting bogged down by stats anyway (it’s not healthy to be obsessive about things like this), but if my badge hasn’t rectified itself in the next couple of weeks I’ll try and find out what’s going on.
Guest Posts & Opportunities
I’m following a great blogger, coach and social media manager called Dani from Flourishing Freelancer, who helps both bloggers and entrepreneurs create and grow their online presence.
Check out her site if you get the chance – she shares access to a free resource library plus plenty of advice on how to grow online and earn yourself money.
So Dani and I have been chatting on email (I’m hoping she’ll take part in my In The Blog Seat Series soon!), but in the meantime, I took to her ‘hot seat’ to answer questions for her Blogging Bosses interview series.
Thanks for having me Dani!
I was also pleased as punch to be featured in Vision One Homes’ round-up post on the top three things to consider when creating a functional bathroom. They must have read my post on creating my perfect bathroom and decided I’d make a good person to ask.
Thrilled to take part of course – have a read here!
Apart from failing to start the ebook design I had intended to start this month, my other ‘epic fail’ came in the form of a series of migraine attacks.
I had three attacks in two weeks and, as you can imagine, it really put a spanner in the works on what I had planned for the blog.
I wouldn’t care so much, but for some reason my brain decides I’m going to get a migraine over the weekend.
Sadly, the weekend is the only time when I get more than an hour or two at a time to really work on the blog, so having that taken away from me from something beyond my control was unbelievably frustrating.
I also felt like I had ruined my family’s weekend too – me not wanting to go out or do anything together meant they didn’t want to leave me alone. And that made me feel even worse.
The final straw came when we went out with friends and I was unable to finish enjoying the night with them due to my migraine. It was at that point that I decided enough was enough and – I’m going to look into having Botox injected in my head.
Apparently, they’ve been known to prevent migraines for many people. Heck, I’ve tried most other things to combat them and it hasn’t worked, so I feel I’ve got to give this one a go. I’ll keep you posted of course.
My vlogging channel
I’m really proud to say that I’ve made at least two videos this month – the Black Betty Review I mentioned earlier – plus a ‘Tween Talk’ video with my daughter, Girlwrighter (Nadja), about bullies.
We really enjoyed making the video and tackling the issue of bullies and being bullied head on. Nadja was (understandably) a little reluctant to divulge ways in which she has been victimised – and put on a brave face when it came to talking about her thoughts on the subject and what she thinks is best to do.
I’m really proud of her for sitting there and chatting about it – especially as she had absolutely no idea that I was going to choose that subject matter to discuss – you should see her face when I announce it!
I was chuffed to discover that I’ve been nominated in the top 100 Interior Design Blogger Awards – it’s always nice to hear people have been checking out my site, although the picture they chose of me isn’t particularly flattering! Finally, something really interesting happened to me this month. It was an email exchange that I had with a brand that was shocked to discover that I’d want remunerating for wanting to promote THEIR brand. I know, right?
The whole thing bothered me so much that I decided to write a blog post on it. Luckily, plenty of fellow bloggers concurred with my ‘open letter’ to the brand, which called them out on their ridiculous work ethics.
Fortunately, most of the brands I work with understand that professional bloggers need to earn money – if only they all arrived at the same conclusion!
That’s about it for February – for March I’m getting focused on blog organisation (SEO and consistency being the two big words!) It’s something I should have looked at from the beginning, but we don’t know these things when we start off do we?!
Blogging Month: February At A Glance
What was great? Paring back the blog posts to focus on SEO and learning about affiliate links. It’s all about the priorities!
What wasn’t? Receiving that shocking email from a brand.
